Bicycling as a mode of transportation is on the rise and a new Maryland law mandates bicycle inclusion in university facility master plans. With increasing amounts of traffic, improvements in bicycle infrastructure can safely reduce many congestion issues while promoting physical activity for students, staff, faculty, and guests.
During a workshop officials, facilities management employees, staff, local government representatives, planners, and passionate bicyclists meet for an interactive education workshop on becoming Bicycle Friendly. Bike Maryland discusses the 5E’s (Engineering, Encouragement, Education, Enforcement, and Evaluation/Planning) of bicycle infrastructure that enhance businesses and campuses. Attendees will identify issues, set priorities, and organize an action plan for making their campus more bicycle friendly.

Bike Maryland gathered staff, faculty, and students from thirteen of Maryland's colleges and universities to Frederick from as far as Salisbury for this half day event to hear a variety of speakers discuss ways to learn how to make their campus increasingly bicycle friendly. The workshop lead up to a lunchtime talk by Valarie Goubeau, Acting Assistant Director of Transportation at the University of Maryland College Park, who discussed some of the challenges and successes leading up to becoming a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly University- the only campus in Maryland to acheive this award.

We would also like to acknowledge and thank the many presenters who shared their eperience for the collective good!!
