COMMUTING AND MASS TRANSIT

* This page contains information and links for those wishing to commute or travel without the use of a personal automobile.

BALTIMORE - The Maryland Transit Administration operates buses, light rail and a 16-mile underground subway line in Baltimore and its surrounding suburbs. Baltimore’s mass transit system is not as comprehensive as neighboring systems in Washington and Philadelphia, but Baltimore commuters still tend to use transit at higher rates than commuters in other major cities. In 2007 the US Census Bureau ranked Baltimore 7th among the nation’s 50 largest cities for percentage of residents commuting to work by mass transit.

The Maryland Transit Administration has a fairly open policy towards bringing bicycles on light rail and subway cars. Unless trains are full, bicycles are welcome on these rail systems. Bike parking is available at most subway stations and roughly a third of the light rail stations. Unfortunately, only folding bikes are allowed on the MARC commuter trains that run between Baltimore and Washington.

The Maryland Transit Administration is one of the very few remaining transit systems in the country that does not have buses equipped with bicycle racks. Currently, the MTA bus network is not bicycle accessible in any way. One Less Car is working hard to change this. If you would like to voice your support for bike racks on MTA buses, please email Maryland’s Secretary of Transportation, John Porcari, at jporcari@mdot.state.md.us

If you would like to learn more about Baltimore’s mass transit system please visit the MTA at www.mtamaryland.com

ANNAPOLIS - Annapolis Transit has a fairly extensive bus network that services much of central Anne Arundel County. Bike racks are located on buses serving Annapolis, Edgewater, Parole, Arnold, and Kent Island. The Kent Island bus provides a way to get you and your bike across the Bay Bridge. Visit the Annapolis Transportation Department web page to get information on routes and contact information.

WASHINGTON, DC – Washington’s mass transit system is one of the world’s best. Anchored by an extensive subway system, the WMATA transit network connects all major airports, institutions and most surrounding residential areas to the nation’s capital. WMATA also has bicycle racks on all local and express buses. If you want to know more about DC’s transit system go to www.wmata.com

Our friends at the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) have a great deal of information on how to use your bicycle on the area’s transit system. They also have tons of good commuting tips for people in and around DC. Check out their website at www.waba.org
